10 Stretches to Relieve Back Pain (Safe and Effective)
Why Back pain is one of the most common problems I see when working with clients, especially busy professionals over 40. Long hours sitting, stress, and lack of movement often cause stiffness and tension in the lower back.
The good news is that simple stretches can make a huge difference.
Below you can watch my video where I demonstrate 10 effective stretches that can help relieve back pain and improve mobility.
In this video I demonstrate 10 stretches that can help relieve back pain and improve mobility. These exercises are simple, effective, and can be done at home without equipment.
Important: You Don’t Need to Do All 10
One of the biggest mistakes people make when stretching is thinking they need to complete every exercise in a routine.
You don’t.
Every body is different. Some stretches will feel great for you, while others may not.
Always listen to your body.
If a stretch increases pain instead of relieving it, stop and skip that one.
Stretching should help your back feel better, not worse.
Be Careful If You Have a Bulging or Herniated Disc
Another important point I explain in the video is that some common stretches can actually make disc injuries worse.
If you have a bulging disc, herniated disc, or another back injury, certain movements (especially aggressive spinal flexion or twisting) can increase pressure on the spine.
That’s why I also show stretches you should avoid if you have these types of injuries.
When in doubt, always start gently and progress slowly.
Why Stretching Helps Back Pain
Stretching can help your back in several ways:
• Reduces muscle tension
• Improves mobility in the hips and spine
• Increases blood flow to tight areas
• Helps restore normal movement patterns
Many people think their back pain comes only from the lower back itself. But in reality, tight hips, hamstrings, and glutes are often part of the problem.
That’s why the stretches in this routine target the entire chain.
Consistency Is Key
Doing these stretches once may help temporarily, but the real benefits come from consistency.
Try doing a few of these stretches daily, especially if you sit a lot during the day.
Even 5–10 minutes per day can make a big difference over time.
Final Tip
If a stretch feels good, keep it in your routine.
If it makes your pain worse, skip it.
Your body will tell you what works.
